Listening to: A is for Arsenic. The Poisons of Agatha Christie

Da wir ja letztlich - und auch demnächst wieder - relativ viel True Crime gemacht haben, lasst uns doch heute mal ausbrechen aus diesem Hass-Liebe Ding mit potentieller Frustrationsgefahr und etwas viel unterhaltsameres tun: über fiktive Giftmorde sprechen!

Wem das Cover (I love it!) bekannt vorkommt, könnte sich vielleich an Death by Shakespeare von derselben Autorin erinnern, bei dem wir ja auch schon beinahe unangemessen viel Spaß mit fiktiven Todesarten hatten.;-)

Bevor ich aber meine überschaubaren Gedanken zum Hörbuch vortrage, worum geht es eigentlich in A is for Arsenic. The Poisons of Agatha Christie geschrieben von Kathryn Harkup, gesprochen von Beth Chalmers?

Agatha Christie's detailed plotting is what makes her books so compelling. Christie used poison to kill her characters more often than any other murder method, with the poison itself being a central part of the novel, and her choice of deadly substances was far from random; the chemical and physiological characteristics of each poison provide vital clues to the discovery of the murderer. With gunshots or stabbings the cause of death is obvious, but not so with poisons. How is it that some compounds prove so deadly and in such tiny amounts?

Christie demonstrated her extensive chemical knowledge (much of it gleaned from her working in a chemists during both world wars) in many of her novels, but this is rarely appreciated by the reader. A is for Arsenic celebrates the use of science in Christie's work. Written by Christie fan and research chemist Kathryn Harkup, each chapter takes a different novel and investigates the poison (or poisons) the murderer used. A is for Arsenic looks at why certain chemicals kill, how they interact with the body, and the feasibility of obtaining, administering and detecting these poisons both at the time the novel was written and today. This book is published as part of the 125th anniversary celebration of Christie's birth.

Irgendwann muss ich wirklich, wirklich, wirklich, mal eine Biographie von Dame Agatha lesen, denn diese Dame ist nicht nur nach Shakespeare die meistgelesene Autorin der Welt, sondern hat es auch geschafft in ihrem echten Leben mehr zu erleben, als mache ihrer Figuren - also quasi die Antithese zu mir!

Hier habe ich z.B. gelernt, dass sie auch geprüfte Apotheken-Assistentin war, was erklärt warum sie sich mit sovielen Giften auskannte- Und write what you know macht ja einfach sehr viel Sinn, man mag mir das ruhig glauben (und meiner Suchhistorie...) wie anstrengend es sein kann Todesarten zu recherchieren, von denen man keine Ahnung hat.;-)

Natürlich sollte man sich ein wenig vorsehen, wenn man nicht zum Club der Unspoilerbaren gehört, aber ansonsten kann man sich hier gut unterhalten lassen, ein wenig was lernen und das alles ohne Frustgefahr.

Das müsste ja schon mindestens 4 von 5 Giftringe wert sein, no?;-)
