Kurz vor meinem unfreiwilligen Lazaretturlaub wurde die Longlist für den women's orice for non-fiction veröffentlicht und wir wissen ja nun inzwischen, dass ich mich nicht davon abhalten kann da durchzuscrollen und ein paar Empfehlungen mitzunehmen. ;-)
In diesem Jahr gab es viele Memoirs und nicht viel anderes, was ein wenig schade ist, weil mich 99,9% von Memoirs nicht interessieren, aber ein paar Titel habe ich dann doch mal auf die Merkliste gesetzt. Und in meinem verrotzten Zustand, dachte ich fangen wir mal mit dem Thema an, das so gar nicht in meiner üblichen Fangzone für Bücher ist: The Genius of Trees: How trees mastered the elements and shaped the world geschrieben und gesprochen von Harriet Rix.

Von Neuigkeiten aus der Tudor-Forschung bin ich durch das automatische Abspiel-Feature von Audible dann bei gleich dem nächsten Buch gelandet, das ich zwar nicht kannte, aber dass (leider) auch wenig neue Erkenntnisse zu bieten hatte.

Aber ich war über Ostern bettlägerig mit einer fiesen Erkältung und brauchte Aufmunterung und daher schauen wir heute mal worum es geht in The Stolen Crown geschrieben und gesprochen von Tracy Borman:

Normalerweise würde ich zwischen zwei Sachbüchern eine längere Blog-Pause machen, aber wenn es Bücher sind, die direkt miteinander zu tun haben und die Autorin des 2. sich dezidiert auf die Autorin des 1. bezieht, dass ist das glaube ich eine gute Paarung für eine Woche. ;-)
Matilda. Empress, Queen, Warrior geschrieben von Catherine Hanley gesprochen von Jennifer M. Dixon entstand scheinbar aus einem ähnlichen Impuls, den ich beim Lesen von She-Wolves auch hatte - abgesehen von den Tudor Königinnen war Matilda die einzige regierende Königin in diesem Line-Up und quasi das "böse Vorbild", das die ganze Tudor-Krise um einen männlichen Erben immer wieder befeuert hat. Wer war also die erste englische Königin und was sagt uns dieses Buch darüber?

Man weiß ja was ich über Sachbuch-Cover denke, auf denen Menschen ohne Kopf zu sehen sind - auch wenn es diesmal wenigstens tatsächlich ein Portrait von Elisabeth ist^^ - aber manchmal muss man eben auch seine Sachbücher nach Titeln kaufen und She-Wolves ist schwer zu schlagen, no? ;-)

Es ist ja ein beliebtes Format Geschichte aufzuarbeiten: London in hundert Objekten oder das Römische Imperium in 100 Tagen oder sowas. Wir machen demnächst noch was zu Vikinger-Ausgrabungen, das ungefähr so funktioniert, aber bis dahin lasst uns mal über diese Biographie in 24 Tagen sprechen - und sehen, ob sie mir Queen Victoria irgendwie sympathischer macht. ;-)

Es war mal wieder Zeit für Dinge mit Weltraum, aber ich war irgendwie nicht in der Stimmung für die Fortsetzungen von Children of Time - nicht, weil ich nicht denke, dass diese Bücher gut sein werden, sondern weil ich befürchtete, dass sie eher zu gut sein könnten, wenn man weiß was ich meine...? Also, gut in dem Sinne, dass ich wieder gezwungen werde mir komplexe Gedanken zu machen und manchmal ist das eben nicht was ich grade brauchen kann, bzw. die Energie zu habe? Und daher brauchte ich was lustiger/leichtes und bin beim Bobiverse gelandet, weil Tine mir irgendwann mal erzählt hatte, dass sie das erste Buch nicht so überzeugend fand, weil ihr der Konflikt fehlte. ;-)
Das klang perfekt, also bevor wir zu meinen überschaubaren Beobachtungen kommen, worum geht es in: We Are Legion (We Are Bob) geschrieben von Dennis E. Taylor, gesprochen von Ray Porter?
Bob Johansson has just sold his software company for a small

Wir fangen das Jahr mit einem Bonus-Montag-Post an, also ziemlich genau da, wo wir letztes Jahr aufgehört haben, weil ich sonst nicht nachkomme mit allen Medien, die ich so die Gelegenheit hatte wahrzunehmen ... ich halte das mal für ein gutes Zeichen, ok? ;-)
Es gibt nur wenige Bücher, die ich kurz nach der Veröffentlichung kaufe, weil ich eigentlich nie weiß was wann erscheint - weswegen die meisten Bücher auf diesem Blog auch vergleichsweise uralt sind, aber wen das stört, der ist vermutlich schon vor vielen Jahren abgesprungen?
Aber, in diesem Fall hat mich das große A rechtzeitig sogar so rechtzeitig erinnert, dass der neue Rivers of London erscheint, dass ich das Buch woanders vorbestellen konnte, wenn das kein Service ist? Bevor wir aber jetzt gleich über meine Eigenheiten sprechen was Ich-Erzähler angeht, worum geht es in Stone & Sky, das 10. Buch in der Rivers of London Reihe von Ben Aaronovitch?

Ok, ich gebe es zu, ich habe vielleicht 2025 verhext ... Habe ich den letzten Post für 2024 tatsächlich aufgehört mit "es kann ja nur besser werden"? Kaum zu glauben, dass man so naiv sein kann ... also diesen Fehler machen wir definitiv nicht nochmal, 2025 kann weg und ich will nicht mal einen Ersatz.^^
Vorherrschendes Gefühl für 2026?
Ehrlich, ich weiß es nicht. Ich bin einfach sehr müde und fände es schön, wenn 2026 mal wieder weniger anstrengend würde? Mal sehen, ob das tatsächlich zuviel verlangt ist.
2025 zum ersten Mal getan?
Da fällt mir auch nicht wirklich was ein ... wir haben viel Baustelle gelebt in 2025, aber das ist ja nun inzwischen ein alter Hut. Wir waren am Strand und das war schön, aber auch nicht wirklich neu ... trotzdem immer ein Highlight, also was solls, hier ist ein Foto! ;-)
2025 nach langer Zeit wieder getan? Auch da bin ich nicht wirklich sicher was 2025 uns gebracht hat außer Dreck und IT-Problemen (fragt nicht). Aber wir waren in Amsterdam und im Zoo. Wir waren lange nicht in Amsterdam und lange nicht in einem Zoo, also was solls, hier ist noch ein Foto.
2025 leider nicht getan? Ich will mich ja ungern wiederholen, aber irgendeins der unfertigen Manuskripte auf meiner Festplatte fertig zu kriegen, wäre tatsächlich so ein Ding, das ich mal wieder gerne machen würde ... meine kleinen Monk-Kerne sind sehr unglücklich darüber, dass alles so halbfertig rumliegt. ;-) Definitives To-Do für 2026!
(Un)wort des Jahres? Alles was mit AI zu tun hat? Ich kann es nicht mehr hören ... die Krone der Ironie war eigentlich, dass ich kurz vor Weihnachten noch ein AI-Training hätte machen sollen, obwohl uns im Büro momentan nicht einmal Internet gegönnt wird (fragt nicht). Sagen wir mal dieser Task rutscht seit Wochen immer eine Woche nach hinten auf meiner To-Do Liste und ist jetzt ein Januar Problem. ;-) Nennt mich altmodisch, aber ich wollte in den 90ern nicht mit Anrufbeantwortern reden und will heute nicht mit Robotern reden. Wenn ich an der Welt verzweifeln will, dann wenigstens durch Kontakt zu echten Menschen.^^
Allgemeinzustand? Genervt? Das mit dem auf mentale Ressourcen achten, hat in 2025 nicht immer so funktioniert und momentan will ich eigentlich vor allem 3 Monate in einer Winterschlafhöhle verbringen, in der mich niemand stört. Any takers? ;-) Andererseits war das Jahr zumindest gesundheitlich wieder besser, das Immunsystem scheint sich berappelt zu haben. Immerhin etwas!
Urlaub und Partys? Den Urlaub erwähnte ich ja schon - vor allem das mit dem Urlaub im Herbst sollte man eigentlich öfter machen, es hat zwar den Großteil des Tages geregnet, aber irgendwie war's trotzdem schön mal rauszukommen, wenn es nicht furchtbar heiß ist ... wird für nächstes Jahr vorgemerkt! ;-)
Parties habe ich dafpr keine zu bieten, im Baustellen-Chaos Zuhause (hier immerhin ein Foto vom Ergebnis) und IT-Chaos im Büro (fragt einfach wirklich nicht) ist mir sämtliche Motivation verloren gegangen. Ich bin sehr dankbar für die kleinen Ausflüge, die es trotzdem gab (Minigolf Spielen hätte auch unter ewig nicht getan gepasst, aber ich habe leider kein Beweisfoto für meinen heroischen 2. Platz... ;-) und die Menschen, die sich mein Gejammer das ganze Jahr angehört haben. You know who you are! :-*
Haare länger oder kürzer? Es scheint sich zu einer Routine zu entwickeln, dass mein Kopfgemüse einfach solange wachsen darf, bis ich irgendwann zu genervt davon bin die letzten 20cm auszubürsten, die dann in einem kleineren Wutanfall der Küchenschere zum Opfer fallen. ;-) Was soll ich sagen ... funktioniert bisher, also was solls?
Kurzsichtiger oder Weitsichtiger? Fun fact: Beides! Nachdem ich in 2025 zumindest einen ewigen To-Do Punkt von der Liste streichen konnte und mir einen neuen Augenarzt gesucht habe, stellten wir fest, dass mein linkes Auge besser sieht als vorher, das rechte dafür schlechter ... Vielleicht ist es die Altersweitsicht, die langsam meine Kurzsichtigkeit ausgleicht, vielleicht liegt es am Augeninnendruck, der zu hoch ist, vielleicht ist es eine Vorstufe von Grünem Star, wir werden es erst nach dem Kontrolltermin im Januar erfahren. Diese Untersuchung für 120€ darf ich allerdings selbst zahlen, weil meine Krankenkasse es nicht für dringend nötig hält meine Arbeitsleistungsfähigkeit zu erhalten indem ich sehen kann. Das bringt uns dann nahtlos zum nächsten Punkt.
Mehr Kohle oder weniger? Geht so, aber es bleibt immer noch nichts übrig, denn ...
Mehr ausgegeben oder weniger? Was soll ich da noch sagen? Handwerker und Medikamente werden nicht billiger. Es macht keinen Spaß, wissen wir alle, no?
Mehr bewegt oder weniger? Nachdem letztes Jahr ja ein ziemlicher Totalausfall war, versuche ich zumindest die Alltagsbewegung immer mitzunehmen. Nächstes Jahr hoffe ich auf ein bisschen mehr Gartenarbeit (da war in 2025 weder Wetter noch Energiekapazität gnädig) und sobald mein Schlafzimmer endlich fertig ist, würde ich auch gerne wieder eine kleine Ecke einrichten, in der meine Yogamatte Platz hat. Alt werden ist nichts für Feiglinge, wie wir wissen und ich würde zumindest gerne wieder an Beweglichkeit arbeiten.
Film/Serie des Jahres? Wieder mal habe ich weniger Filme als Limited Series gesehen und wieder mal sind mit vor allem die im Gedächtnis geblieben, die eigentlich für Kinder sind ... was soll ich sagen, ich bin einfach zu unterhalten und möchte lieber lustige Dinge sehen, wenn ich gestresst bin. Für den besten Film muss ich daher mal tief in den Januar zurückgehen und Inside Out 2 nominieren für den "zu wahr um schön zu sein" Faktor.
Bei den Serien war ich ziemlich gut dabei dieses Jahr, ich meine Kaos, Blue Eye Samurai und The Residence in einem Jahr? Damn! ;-) Beste Serie geht natürlich trotzdem an The Residence, neuer comfort watch unlocked ist immer gut.
(Hör/Sach)Buch des Jahres? Ich habe mal wieder mehr Hörbücher, als tatsächliche Bücher konsumiert in diesem Jahr, aber das dürfte niemanden mehr überraschen und daher vergebe ich wie immer das beste Hörbuch an eine Geschichte, die tatsächlich besser wird durch das Hörerlebnis, nicht nur eine Geschichte, die ich zufällig als Hörbuch gehört habe.
In 2025 muss der goldene Gummipunkt an Odyssee gehen, das war vermutlich jedem und seinem Hund klar, oder? ;-)
Mein bestes Buch ist ein knappes Rennen zwischen Children of Time und Our Endless Numbered Days, die beide auf ihre Art nicht zu meinen üblichen Büchern gehören ... aber ich glaube die Space Spiders gewinnen, mir hyperintelligente, riesige Spinnen schmackhaft zu machen, ist eine Leistung, die die Krone verdient!
Und last, but not least, geht mein Sachbuch des Jahres an die Rebell Empresses, who's surprised?
Erkenntnis des Jahres? Für wichtige Lebenserkenntnisse war in 2025 auch irgendwie wenig Zeit, obwohl ich sehr viel Hoffnung in die große 42 gesetzt hatte - es gibt sogar ein Video dazu ... ;-)
Trotzdem bin ich ein wenig stolz auf mich, dass das "gefährlich müde" Gefühl aus dem letzten Jahr zumindest trotz allem nicht schlimmer geworden ist. Das ist an sich schon eine Leistung, trust me.
Das schönste Geschenk, das ich jemandem gemacht habe? Ich würde sagen der Zoo-Auflug, das war an sich ein Geschenk für den Ehemann, aber ich weiß nicht, ob es wirklich zählt, weil das Geschenk an sich mindestens 1 wenn nicht sogar 2 Jahre zu spät war ... Baustellen, ich weiß es kann niemand mehr hören ... Aber ich habe auch Otter-Socken im Gift-Shop gekauft, die sind ziemlich großartig, um mich mal selbst zu loben ... ;-)
Das schönste Geschenk, das mir jemand gemacht hat? Wieder mal habe ich viele schöne Geschenke bekommen in diesem Jahr, aber ich denke die Sissi-Sterne müssen nochmal erwähnt werden, spätestens nach dem besten Hörbuch, no?? ;-)
Der schönste Satz, den jemand zu mir gesagt hat? Wo wir bei den besten Geschenken waren, der Ehemann lobte letztlich noch meine sehr selbstlose Geschenkauswahl - gut, von dem Trip nach Amsterdam hatte ich durchaus auch was, aber ich habe ihm auch eine Trivial Pursuit Master Edition geschenkt und mich als Opfer Gegner angeboten ... wenn das nicht selbstlos ist, weiß ich es auch nicht. ;-)
Die größte Enttäuschung? Der Januar scheint sich zum Monat für horrende Tierarztbesuche zu entwickeln. In 2025 musste das zweite von zwei Kreuzbändern bei unserem Großhund operiert werden, was nicht nur zur Ebbe in der Haushaltskasse beigetragen hat, sondern auch maximal stressig war mit unserem eh schon furchtbar ängstlichen Panikhund. Aber immerhin konnte ich ihr eine hübsche OP-Hose nähen ... das sah ein wenig niedlich aus ... man muss das verfickte Positive sehen, wo es geht.^^
Beste Idee/Entscheidung des Jahres? Es mag Menschen geben, die das nicht verstehen, aber ich glaube ohne die beiden 4-Stunden-Schmerz-Sessions für mein neues Tattoo wäre mir irgendwann so im dunkelsten Winter wirklich ein wenig der Lebenswillen abhanden gekommen - ich übertreibe nur leicht, die lieben Kollegen haben sich dieses Jahr wirklich Mühe gegeben das Jahresende nochmal richtig stressig zu gestalten, weil man das dringend braucht.^^
Aber wir sind erwachsen und das heißt wir können unser letztes Geld für permanente Sticker ausgeben und ich persönlich finde das hat sich definitiv gelohnt. ;-)
Vorsatz fürs neue Jahr?
Dinge endlich fertig machen! Das ist so der Vorsatz, egal ob es um die schon erwähnten Manuskripte geht, oder um den Garten, die endlosen Renovierungen, oder meinen Stapel unfertiger Nähprojekte ... einfach irgendwas irgendwann mal irgendwie fertig machen ...
2025 war mit einem Wort? Bläch! Besser kann ich das grade nicht zusammenfassen und ich werde auch NICHT sagen, dass es nicht schlimmer werden kann, einfach nur weil das offensichtlich als Challenge missverstanden wird, wenn ich das tue.^^ Aber die Hoffnung stribt wie immer zuletzt ... ;-)
Man sollte ja nicht glauben, dass es im Jahre des Internets 2025 immer noch Tudor Bücher gibt, die ich nicht kenne - und die in diesem Fall auch noch nicht ewig alt sind ;-) - aber es ist vermutlich einfach das Prinzip von Nachfrage und Angebot. Meine Tudor Obsession ist vermutlich eine lebenslange Diagnose und da ich immer dasvon ausgehe, dass ich nicht einzigartig bin, gibt es offensichtlich eine Nachfrage.
Was nicht immer heißt, dass neuere Bücher uns auch neuere Dinge zu erzählen haben, aber in diesem Fall ist das durchaus der Fall. Es war mal wieder Zeit zu entscheiden welches Hörbuch den monatlichen Zuschlag erhalten sollte und ausnahmsweise habe ich mich mal von meinem Ehemann inspirieren lassen - nicht, dass ich viel Zuspruch brauche, um Habsburger oder Tudors zu lesen, wie man weiß.
Aber der Mann erzählte irgendwann mal nach der Arbeit von einer Unterhaltung unter Kollegen, in der sich jemand auf "Juana the Mad" beziehen wollte und er besagten Kollegen darauf hinweisen konnte, dass diese Betitelung unter modernen Historiker:innen hochgradig aus der Mode gekommen ist. Ich war sehr stolz! ;-)
Und es erinnerte mich daran, dass ich Sister Queens. The Noble, Tragic Lives of Katherine of Aragonand Juana, Queen of Castile geschrieben Julia Fox, gesprochen on Rosalyn Landor schon ewig auf meiner Liste hatte und eine zuverlässige Autorin, gepaart mit einer meiner liebsten Hörbuchsprecherinnen und dann auch noch Habsburger und Tudors? Ich habe bestimmt schon in mehreren Buch-Videos erwähnt, dass mein SuB normalerweise recht überschaubar ist, weil ich nicht wirklich gerne shoppe - nein, auch keine Bücher, irgendwie stresst mich auch da die Reizüberflutung, was vermutlich zumindest vortailhaft für meinen Geldbeutel ist. ;-)
Aber once in a blue moon *pun intended* trifft auch mich mal so ein "andere Lesende lasen auch" am Kopf und ich denke mir "das brauche ich auch"! So geschehen mit diesem Cover, das wieder einmal bis auf die nervigen Werbezitate ziemlich Perfektion ist, no?

Manchmal gibt es einfach Bücher, die kann man nicht nicht kaufen und wenn eine deiner Lieblingssachbuchautorinnen noch ein Buch über die Habsburger schreibt - und dann auch noch über Sisi ausgerechnet^^ - dann ist das ein must-buy. Damit könnte man es jetzt bewenden lassen, aber da die Popkultur ja nicht müde wird mir jedes Jahr 3 neue (gefühlt) Sisi Serien und Filme vorzuschlagen, habe ich dazu ... Gedanken. ;-)

Wir machen eine kurze Pause vom angekündigten Leseprogramm, weil es die Shortlist für den Women's Prize for Non-Fiction gibt und ich natürlich auch dieses Jahr die Finger nicht von den Büchern lassen konnte.
Tatsächlich lerne ich ja immer von Leena und finde normalerweise genau die Bücher spannend, die sie nicht interessant findet (und umgekehrt;-), aber das ist ja nun Geschmacksache und es war daher überhaupt keine Überraschung, dass auf ihrer Liste das einzige "klassische" Geschichtsbuch ganz unten war und auf meiner To-Buy-Liste ganz oben. ;-)

Ich habe ja bisher ganz gute Erfahrungen mit Hörproduktionen vom großen A gemacht, von daher war ich sehr interessiert, als man mir sagte, dass es inzwischen auch eine ungekürzte Version von WWZ gibt, ein Buch, dass ich zum ersten Mal vor 10 Jahren gelesen habe und das seitdem zu den Büchern gehört, die in einem sehr buchstäblichen Sinne mein Leben verändert haben.
Falls wir uns aber verständlicherweise nicht mehr erinnern, was vor 10 Jahren, war, hier eine kurze Erinnerung worum es geht in World War Z: The Complete Edition: An Oral History of the Zombie War geschrieben (und teilweise gelesen von) Max Brooks, der den Interviewer gibt, gesprochen unter anderem von Martin Scorsese, Alfred Molina, Nathan Fillion, Simon Pegg, Mark Hamill, Carl & Rob Reiner und Jürgen Prochnow:
The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max
Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand
experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled
across the United States of America and throughout the world, from
decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of thirty million souls
to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet. He recorded the

Ok, dieses Buch war länger auf meiner Merkliste, als ich zugeben sollte, weil es eine hyperintelligente Spinnen-Alien-Rasse enthält und mich die Recherche für die sprechenden Spinnen in Elysion Monate von Schlaf gekostet hat ...
Aber, man muss es dem Autoren einfach lassen, der Prolog ist der Hammer, nachdem die automatische Vorschau von Audible der Meinung war, ich sollte den hören, konnte ich nicht widersprechen. ;-)
Bevor wir jetzt aber darüber sprechen wie das mit den Spinnen-Aliens war, worum geht es eigentlich in Children of Time geschrieben von Adrian Tchaikovsky, gesprochen von Mel Hudson?

It is a truth universally acknowledged, dass selbst die langweiligsten Aufgaben leichter fallen, wenn man dabei ein wenig Unterhaltung hat - oder zumindest das Gefühl, dass man nicht alleine werkeln muss. ;-) Und da ich sehr viele Kisten gepackt und Möbel geschraubt habe in letzter Zeit, wollte ich euch kurz 2 YouTube Kanäle erpfehlen, die hervorragend funktionieren, wenn man nur das Gefühl möchte nicht allein im Raum zu sein und/oder jemanden braucht, der eine interessante Geschichte erzählt, damit man sich nicht langweilt.
Beide Kanäle gehören derselben YouTuberin und basieren auf demselben Prinzip - sie erzählt sie Geschichte, ihr Mann sitzt außerhalb der Kamera und bildet das primäre Publikum, stellt Fragen, wirft Kommentare ein oder reagiert einfach nur. Das Ganze funktioniert hervorragend, ich lasse mir Geschichten erzählen in einem "wir unterhalten uns nur ganz zwanglos" Szenario und erledige nebenbei noch meine To-Do-Liste.
Die Abo-Counts beider Kanäle lassen mal wieder darauf schließen, dass ich etwas gefunden habe, das Millionen Menschen schon vor mir kannten, aber vielleicht geht euch das ja auch so. ;-)
