Summer Holiday Stop 4: Manchester

Although I intended to begin this news update on a lighter note, I should begin with: Whatever you might have heard about rioting in the UK - we did not do it and we are fine!!!
In fact we left Manchester this morning for York and when we stayed there everything was quiet. We did however visit the city center and Salford Quay yesterday - which is quite disturbing when you see the images filmed there today...
But nevertheless lets recall the quiet days we spend there!

Day 1: Bibliophiliac's Graceland
After being upgraded to a better room at our overbooked hostel we hit the city center together with the first heavy rains we have expirienced here. After a short lunchbreak the worst weather was past however and we could enjoy our round of the city center in peace.
Highlight of the day: Visiting the John Ryland Library - a gothik-victorian temple to books, collections & the written word. I personally would enlist in the Manchester University just to be allowed to read there!:)

Day 2: Mummies & Docks
Unfortunately the rain returned over night so we started our day at the Manchester Museum - as all museums, libraries & galeries in Manchester are free of charge and there are 3 free buslines operating in the city center this is affordable even for backpackers.;) The most obvious choice would perhaps be the MOSI (museum of science & industry;), but I'm afraid when given the choice between mummies & dinosaurs or steam-engines the mummies will win every time!
By early afternoon the sun was back though and so we paid a bit of money to get out of the city towards the docklands, Salford Quay & Old Trafford Stadium.
Highlight of the day: Eye to eye with Stan the T-Rex. I just looove dinosaurs!:)

Today we had brilliant weather again to visit York, but there is a really bad forecast for tomorrow, so our trip to Whitby might not take place after all. I'm not spending 6hours on the train back&forth just to be rained on in another city...;)
